Emerging Fiction Method....Mongoliad

Cutting edge writer Neal Stephenson and friends are looking to create an App which integrates the collaborative nature of writing with writers, readers and others. Usually, writing is a solitary or partner

Mongoliad

Looking beyond the simple eBook reader mentality, Mongoliad harnesses the writing skills of Neal Stephenson, Greg Bear and others who will all contribute to the developing narrative. While a traditional story exists, Mongoliad’s aim is to create a world of interactivity between writers, readers and other non-literary members who can contribute to and enhance the story.
Mongoliad is due for launch this year and will be available on the iPhone and iPad.

Demoing just a few of Mongoliad’s promised features, Jeremy Bornstein of Subutai told us: “We think that devices like this really change publishing in a pretty fundamental way. Not just moving books into eBooks but really allowing for a lot more creative possibilities for engaging audiences”.

Much like iTunes, the publishing industry is in upheaval over their egocentric control of publishing and its profits rather than empowering the individual artist.

I saw this article on the 'game changer' iPad. "5 Reasons to Wait for iPad 2.0". As far as fiction writing and books go, the article said

3. Annotations for iBooks

One thing the Kindle has going for it in the realm of e-books is its ability to allow for bookmarking, highlighting, and annotations of text. Not mentioned during the iPad demo of iBooks? Those three same features. In fact, no use case for education was even presented during the presentation and no giant e-textbook was projected on the screen behind Jobs' head.

Yet these features are especially are important in selling an e-reader, especially if you want to convince college students to buy the device. Today's students, who mark up their textbooks with notes and highlighting, would have little use for an iBook's "read-only" nature. That means if iBooks are ever to compete with Kindle e-books, Apple will have to add in more interactivity in a future version of the iPad. Until then, colleges are likely to hold off on recommending the device to students, just as they're doing now.

A fascinating column on police forensics on iPhones. Once book is called 'iPhone Forensics". An article, written up about the iPhone's use in an investigation says:

"There's plenty of information an iPhone hangs onto," Jonathan Zdziarski, author of iPhone Forensics, told FoxNews.com. "For example, the iPhone takes a screen shot every time you hit the home button, including shots of your e-mail with the time stamped on it."

And these pieces of information are also critically useful in an investigation:

It's not difficult to understand law enforcement's enthusiasm for the iPhone. Equipped with GPS, a camera, and a Web browser, it can provide a wealth of data to police trying to track a criminal's movements and actions:

* Mapping software will store locations you've searched or directions you've received.

* The auto correcting typing feature of iPhones actually stores words you've typed, which could potentially be accessed months after a message was sent and deleted.

* Photos taken with the phone can contain information about where, when and with which device the image was captured.

Initial reports on the new missile suggest it could reshape conflicts at sea, but U.S. weapons experts told FoxNews.com that it's no game-changer, nor a revolutionary threat to America's aircraft carriers -- which are the center of U.S. Pacific defense strategy.

"Some have called it a game-changer. I would dispute that claim," said Toshi Yoshihara, an associate professor at the U.S. Naval War College.

When complete, the Dong Feng 21D -- a version of which was displayed last year in a Chinese military parade -- would give China the ability to reach and hit U.S. aircraft carriers well before the U.S. can get close enough to the mainland to hit back.

The commander of US forces in the Pacific has warned that China’s military is more aggressively asserting its territorial claims in regional waters.

Writers have been hidden in the film process for many years. Their names may be known among industry professionals at the studios and Lit agencies, but not among the public. They too felt the keen intrusion of technology earlier than most film industry professionals. When personal computers were invented in the early 1980's, their craft was opened up to thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people. These aspiring writers simply thought, "I type, therefore I can write."

Incorrect.

The operation of a mechanical-electronic device - a computer - does not necessarily make one a writer. A writer studies and practices the form and the practice of writing. Screenwriting is the most susceptible to this technology creep of familiarity. There's lots of empty space in a film script that one doesn't have to worry about and, besides, everybody who has seen a movie can write a movie, right? The WGA noted that there are 80,000 submissions a year to their writing registration service. Almost 7,000 finished scripts a month. That's a lot of competition.

Everybody who has listened to music, can play play a musical instrument, right?

Everybody who has driven a vehicle, can drive a NASCAR race car, right?

Not quite the same. Screenwriting is changing permanently.

Rewrite gigs are a gold mine for the top tier of scribes, but for many other writers, a twist on an old motto rings true: Will work for free.

For writers who have sold a script or landed an assignment, studios have gone from making deals that included a traditional first draft, two sets of revisions and a polish to what are called "one-step" deals. It's essentially payment for that first draft, with fees for additional work left to be determined.
